During this semester, the course Sound and Image has taught me the general but comprehensive knowledge of filmmaking, from pre-production, production to post-production. Even though it is a course of master, its content is suitable to the beginner like me, who didn’t do media major in the undergraduate program.
In this course, I have learned many theories and concepts about filmmaking, including shot analysis, 180 degree rule, terms of camera like white balance, aperture and GIAN ,etc. Except the academic knowledge, I also have known many gears for shooting and learned how to operate them like a pro, such as cameras, tripods, booms and lightings. The course do not go deeper but familiarizes you with the whole procedure of filmmaking basically. Sound and Image lays students a good foundation for their study of media as it is delivered in the first semester in the first year in master’s program.
Except learning on class, doing assignment also is a good way to learn something. The original aim of assignment is to let teacher know how much you have learned from the class and articles you read, while doing assignment of this course also is a knowledge-consolidation process. I have known different types of shots on class. Then in the assignment scene analysis, I deconstructed the scene, and analyzed what kind of shot the director has used by using the knowledge I got from the class. I put the knowledge that I learned into practice in this assignment, which contributes to consolidate the knowledge and fix them in my brain. Besides, doing assignment also is a self-study process. Those articles that Paul required us to read and reflect on them also told me many things about film production, some opinions from them are quite novel and insightful and they built me a deeper understanding of film production. I absorbed them into my head and at the same time used these opinion to support my argument in other assignments.
I reviewed my assignment Goals and Desires, in which I wrote that I want my editing skills developed and want to learn movie deconstruction. The editing skills in this course haven’t been delivered too much since it is a comprehensive filmmaking course, but some of them were new and useful to me. What’s more, I used to edit in FCPX but now I am getting familiar with Premier. After finishing 3 assignments that all about scene analysis, I feel that I am getting better in the movie deconstruction. I didn’t know that there are so many details that the director need to work with in only one scene, like camera movement, lighting, costume, characters movement and so on. The movie deconstruction also has deepened my insight of film production.
From my point of view, what I have learned from Sound and Image are different from what I expected but they are of great help to my future study of media.
