In last week’s class, we are required to shoot some videos and recorded some sounds. I shot three videos at that time, two were shot outside and one was inside. I wanted to capture the image with shadow and sunshine, but it was getting dark when we went out to collect images, it was kind of difficult to capture the sunshine. Then I shot one water scene which reflects the sky on the surface, one window scene that reflects sky and clouds. I’m satisfied with the water scene, which is a static shot, but the water keeps flowing, the reflection of sky on the surface also keeps changing. The window scene, however, looks not so good in the camera. The window takes up small space and it isn’t horizontal in the frame. The indoor scene was shot in the library. I found the light on the elevator looks amazing, so I turned my camera to the elevator.
I recorded some sound with Frank, some of them are great, like water sound, footstep sound on the grass and tram sound. We didn’t have much time left after finishing the first four sound, so the quality of latter sound is poorer. Besides, I recorded 3 Haiku readings in English only. They didn’t have much difference for me, so I just picked the best one among them to use in editing.
Because I began my Haiku edit before Monday’s class, I didn’t edit the sounds first. However, I though the haiku sound should place in the beginning, and I found the water scene fits most with the Haiku sound compared with others. So I placed the water scene at first, then followed by the window scene and the indoor scene. I believed that it would make the video more coherent to put two outdoor scenes together.
Next, I added each image a sound. I matched water scene with water sound, window scene with footstep sound and indoor scene with elevator sound. Then I put the Haiku reading below the water scene. Just on a whim I wanna know how it sound like to play the Haiku sound first. So I dragged the Haiku sound back, let the Haiku sound began first, then the water scene came together with the second line of the poem, which turns out that this kind of arrangement creates a poetic beginning. After that, I also added a keyboard sound for this scene, which makes this scene more interesting. It sounds like I was typing the poem when reading it.
I also added a music after the first scene in case the latter two scenes would be dull just with abstract sounds. For the window scene, I added a street sound which enriches the sound of this scene.
What’s more, due to the variety of sounds and images, I added a transition between the first and the second scene, and also the last images and the music fade out in the end, which makes the whole video more smooth.
I didn’t layer sounds much in editing, mostly I just added the music into it. In this Haiku edit, however, I experimented with sounds and images, and finally created a video with rich layering of sounds. Combining images with different sounds helps me realized the importance of sounds, and finds me many possibilities of editing.
