In last week’s class, our group emulated the lighting of my screengrab, which comes from a Spanish TV series Elite. I was watching this TV series last week and found some of its night scenes have fantastic lighting. The screengrab we emulated is that the character stands in the door of the closing store, where has faint blue light. What behind her is a bring road with high color temperature. Her body and half of her face are exposed in blue light while her left shoulder and the right side of her face is orange.

When setting the light, our group put two dedolights with orange color gels in the front left side and the front right side of Irina. The right one was pointed to her right face to copy the red shadow on the character’s right face. And the left one was faced her left shoulder to imitate the lighting on the character’s left shoulder. Then a lighting panel is placed next to the camera facing her left face, it was adjusted to the level that is much more higher than her height so that the light can falls on her just like the light on the top.
We were doing this lighting exercise in the daytime, and the room is quite bright. While the screengrab is from a night scene, the lighting is obvious and creates a high contrast on the character. To address this problem, we turned down the exposure of the camera so that it looks like Irina was in a dark space, and we turned up all the light especially the lighting panel, which is the key light in the lighting.

After comparing the lighting exercise video with the screengrab, I think there is room for us to improve. Not only Irina’s right face, the dedolight also fell some light on her left face and her forehead. I believe it would be better to put the dedolight on her right-hand side, then shorten the distance between them and lower its brightness. Also, the lighting panel should be put on her left-hand side rather than on the front left side. In this way, the blue light will be only on her left face. Besides, I think we should put another dedolight behind Irina, exactly at the 7 o’clock position. In my opinion, the orange lighting on the character’s left shoulder and her hair is from the outdoor light. It hits the rim of the character’s left body, just like the backlight does.
As I write this reflection, I am noticing that I can see things better than when I was doing the lighting exercise. The comparison helps me to realize what I went wrong, and then I concluded them and found solutions for them. This reflection would be helpful for me to do a better job in the next lighting exercise.
