In the MV-like clip, a piece of romantic music is used as background music. Then the lower bird sound is used at the same time to create the sound effect of the park. The footage of bird sound might be recorded by boom and repeated in the video three times. When turning into the next scene, there is a bell sound followed by a wind chime sound to create the transition sound effect.
The next scene starts with the man driving a car, the loud engine sound is edited with a fade effect in the beginning and the end of the sound. Then Dalia throws her scarf in the air, it flies for a while and drops on the ground. The shot of the flying scarf is accompanied by low wind sound, while sounds for throwing the scarf and scarf drops on the ground are much louder. I think the sound of scarf can’t be recorded due to its lightness, I think these sound are recorded by other objects with enough weigh, their volume is edited as louder as the BGM, which likes the style of some drama TV series, to produce a dramatic effect.
When the women in black walking in the desert, her footstep sound can be heard. The wind sound is used as the transition when there is a dissolve in this scene. Suddenly, the BGM is stopped by a book closing sound, followed by Rana’s voice-over, the sound of her hand pounding the table and the sound that woman in black turning into sand.
The clip of Rana working in the Jordan Times and some of her old photos show with her voice-over introducing her journalist job. The keyboard typing sound, recorded by the boom, is added when she is working with her computer. When her old photos play on the screen, the mouse clicking sound can be heard when switching to the next photo. The editor used the bell sound again When the picture of Norma and her introduction on the book appear, I think the editor wants to highlight it by playing this bell sound. After that, an interview with Dr. Amal A. Sabbagh is shown. In this interview, the bird sound can be heard, which shows the viewer that she was interviewed in a garden. When the book Forbidden Love appears on the screen, the bell sound rings again.
When Rana is reading the book, her voice is overlapped with the voice of Norma reading the same page, and then a mystery sound effect fades in to lead out a map, in which a diamond heart is beating with the heartbeat sound made by computer. The editor adds some moving sound when some countries on the map changes their places, these sound are also Sound FX created by computers.
I think the editor used four layers of sounds in this documentary, including BGM, people’s voices, Atmos and foley. Some foley was recorded by the boom, others were generated by computer. When the poster of unisex is shown, the editor adds it with a rattlesnake sound. They are not the same thing, but the rattlesnake sound brings a mysterious effect, which draws the audience’s curiosity to keep watching the documentary.
