I love watching movie and watched lots of good movies, and I thought it would be fantastic to be a crew member in film production. Until reading Crew Roles and Developing A Crew, I realized that film production is way more complex than I thought. What behind an around 100-mins-film are plenty of manpower, material and long-time work.
It’s surprising that a crew has so many roles in the film production. From pre-production to post-production, every crew member has clearly defined tasks. They seem to have their own responsibility, while they also need to cooperate with other crew members and at the same time work under the supervision of their superiors to make sure everything are organized and the process of film-making goes smoothly. Crew members in film production are like beads, they need to be chained to make a good necklace, which means cooperation and Supervision within a crew are inevitable.
Before reading Crew Roles and Developing A Crew, I didn’t know that director of photography is the second important crew member. I used to think that DP is only responsible for the shooting and camera equipment, while DP also need to make decisions for the director to take some burdens from him. I know director need to do many things in film production but have no idea what their responsibilities are. From Crew Roles, I found their responsibilities make huge difference to the film, their decisions on the plot, camera, light and sound are going to affect what a film presents. It can be said that the quality of a movie depends on the director.
Every crew member need to finish their own jobs. A low-budget film may only make a small crew, which means crew members need to take more responsibilities, but it doesn’t affect to make a good film.
