At the beginning of the 2-min sequence an archived footage that the younger self of Bob Dylan was singing the song “No Direction Home” on the stage was shown. Then some monochrome footages of Bob’s hometown and his childhood self were presented, and his voice-over revealed the story of him exposing to music for the first time when he was 10. The BGM is the song he has heard from the radio for the first time. In the interview Bob Dylan confessed the sound of the song made him feel like he was someone else and was born from the wrong parents.
As some footage of his hometown showed he mentioned the situation of his hometown, a small town that most of the land was taken by mine companies. Bob suggests that the bad weather and the lack of warm clothes prevented people from being bad and rebel, they only can do their job obediently. Bob’s dad and uncle opened an electronic store in town and his first job is cleaning up the store, which can teach him the discipline of hardworking.
I think in the next of the film Scorsese and Schoonmaker will use lots of interviews and footage to tell us that the longer Bob has worked in his father’s electronic store, the more he felt his life was dull. He didn’t want to become people who worked in the mine and were being obedient for the whole life. His love for music made him feel like he shouldn’t have belonged here. And finally, on one day the rebellion factor inside his body exploded, he left his hometown and went to a big city to pursue his music dream. He may encounter some difficulties in his journey of music, but he would archive great success and continually reach the new peak in his song production. Finally, he became one of the most famous singers in the world and his music has had a huge impact on American music and culture.
