The essay Writing Effectively introduces what is reflective writing, what content a reflective writing includes and excludes. Next, it gives an exercise which provides three different versions of presentation, some comments on their quality are given to further my understanding of reflective writing. Besides, it provides some strategies for improving learning for every experience.
Before this paper I have never written reflective writing, it is common in western higher education programme while universities in China don’t require their students to do the reflection. I reckon reflective writing helps people to know themselves better, to understand their advantages and disadvantages, to recognize their aims and desires.
I thought that reflective writing is a kind of academic writing, people do it for academic purpose like reflecting project work, dissertation and academic behavior. While this paper shows that there are so many things we can reflect on, such as part-time work experience, relationship with someone and things happened in your life that are pretty complicated.
The example about reflecting on a presentation that have just been done in class deepened my understanding of reflective writing. It demonstrates that reflective writing is not just a process of describing what you did in presentation, but think about your purpose of reflection and feelings, analyze what you have done and what you have learnt from you experience, consider the consequences and other’s opinion to you.
To deal with familiar situations, the methods mentions in this paper seems very useful. I know familiar situations tend to remind me of judgments and thinking of the last situation. The method it taught us is to consider it as a brand-new situation and leave it for few days to do the next step, which helps to make our memories of this situation be light. Another method is to let other peoples to ask you questions, which can lead you to reflect the situation from a different perspective and prevent you from learning similar thing from reflection.
