The Reflection of Next Stage Exercise

On Wednesday of week 8, we are required to shoot a dynamic shot in class Sound and Image. Each of us needed to think about a story and decided the way to shoot it. It was a good exercise but also a challenge for me. Before that I haven’t operated the camera much, especially panning the camera. I was thinking about where my story happens and what kind of story that needs camera movement during the class and it took me so much time, I was the last one to shoot my video. There was a good dynamic shot I have watched in the TV series The Stranger Things kept appearing in my head, it’s shot in the stairs to the basement. An old lady opens the door to the basement and goes down the stairs, the camera crabs up and zoom in two main characters who stand in the doorway. So I decided to refer to it and took a shot on the stairs. I was thinking to let the actor comes from the corridor, which is on the left-hand side of the camera, and goes down the stairs. But after I put the camera in the middle of the stairs and faced it to the corridors, the image looked so weird and terrible. So I quitted this shot and decided to shot upstair.

To be frank, I think my take is bad. I decided the story, location and in a very short time. I tilted up the camera when Hu and Bonnie went up and panned right when they went to the corridor. While it seems like I didn’t put the camera in the right position. When they were coming up, Eri’s head blocked Hu. I should show the complete stairs in this shot so that people who watch this shot can realize what’s going on quicker. Besides, I moved the camera too slowly, so that the camera didn’t follow actors’ movement. I should crab up the camera earlier and end it when Hu and Bonnie have been upstair. In the panning, I panned the camera so slow that Bonnie went out of the camera. I think dynamic shot helps to follow the actor’s movement, it would be better if the dynamic shot is applied in the first two scenes of Lenny. While there is dialogue in the scene three, and it involves an emotional interaction. The application of over-the-shoulder shots in the conversation between two people can contribute to the demonstration of their look and a sense of intimacy.

The move of the camera plays an important role in visual storytelling, so the practice of moving a camera is needed for me if I want to show the audience a more vivid story.
